August 19 marks World Humanitarian Day under the slogan #ActForHumanity. Helping those in greatest need often means risking one’s health and life. In dangerous regions, health workers, volunteers, and rescuers are still being killed. According to the UN, 305 million people worldwide need aid.
Humanitarian workers and civilians should always be safe, yet many die despite never being part of any war. Gaza is now among the most dangerous places on Earth: over 58,000 Palestinians have been killed in the past 20 months, nearly a third of them children. The UN estimates over 10 children lose one or both legs daily. Even “safe zones” are bombed, and evacuations attacked before departure. Since the conflict’s escalation, 900+ healthcare workers in Gaza have died.
Another crisis is the lack of food and water. In children, chronic malnutrition causes disease, stunted growth, and prevents wounds from healing. The Polish Medical Mission fights hunger in Ethiopia and other conflict zones where supply chains have collapsed. Attacks on hospitals also occur in Ukraine, echoing tactics from the war in Syria. Since the start of the full-scale war, the Polish Medical Mission has supported Ukrainian hospitals, especially neonatal units, with equipment and training.
For 25 years, the organization has worked to protect the most vulnerable, providing medical aid to over 1 million people worldwide. Without continued support, the 305 million in need will not diminish.
