In 2024, 2,064 civilians lost their lives in Ukraine, with many more injured in attacks. Around 78% of casualties occurred near the frontline in regions like Donetsk, Kherson, Sumy, and Kharkiv. Polish Medical Mission doctors are providing medical care and delivering medicines to residents in these border areas.

The number of victims spiked in the second half of 2024 as Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure intensified. Regions such as Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy saw increased evacuations due to the attacks. The Kharkiv region, especially around Izium, experienced a 273% rise in civilian-targeted attacks compared to the previous year. Kharkiv is now one of the two regions with the greatest need for humanitarian aid.

These attacks have forced more evacuations from frontline areas. Our medical teams are busy, especially at the transit center for evacuees in Kharkiv. We also support those who remain, mainly elderly people and those with disabilities, ensuring access to healthcare and delivering hard-to-get medicines – says Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart, Humanitarian Aid Program Director at the Polish Medical Mission.

Civilian life is further strained by attacks on infrastructure causing power, gas, and water outages. These conditions make heating difficult, leaving people vulnerable to illness. Even healthcare facilities are frequent targets, with over 2,000 attacks recorded—the highest ever in any conflict monitored by WHO. Damaged clinics and evacuated medical staff leave a healthcare gap filled by mobile clinics, like those run by the Polish Medical Mission in Kharkiv and Sumy.

In 2024, we conducted over 10,000 medical and psychological consultations in our clinics. his war impacts both physical and mental health, especially for vulnerable groups like pregnant women and newborns. From the start of the war, we’ve been supporting neonatal units with equipment and training, directly saving young lives – says Olasińska-Chart.

To aid pregnant women and newborns, PMM also runs a gynecological-pediatric clinic for displaced people in Kyiv Oblast. With support from Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the organization provides neonatal equipment and training across Ukraine, ensuring life-saving care for the youngest victims of war.
