Ethiopia: Strengthening maternal and child healthcare together

3 minutes

In the South-West Shoa region of Ethiopia, we continue our efforts to improve the quality of healthcare for pregnant women, newborns, and the youngest patients. Recently, representatives of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs — Anna Gawłowska and Marta Macheta from the Department of Development Cooperation, along with Łukasz Kaliciak from the Embassy of Poland in Ethiopia — visited facilities where the project supported by #PolskaPomoc is being implemented.

During the visit, equipment for the neonatal intensive care unit was presented, as well as solar panels that ensure continuous operation of a rural health post, even after dark. These investments enhance the safety of mothers and children and increase access to medical care in rural areas. Our activities in South-West Shoa, a region inhabited by over one million people, contribute to improving the health of vulnerable patients.

In recent weeks, our volunteer specialists also worked in Wolisso, supporting local staff in caring for the youngest patients. They included neonatologist Dr. Wiktoria Nowaczyńska and midwife Justyna Szumicka, accompanied by our Humanitarian Aid Director and country coordinator for Ethiopia, Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart. Their work focused on assisting neonatal and malnutrition care units and strengthening the skills of medical teams.

The project in South-West Shoa includes training in neonatal care and emergency response, equipping hospitals and health centers with modern and specialized medical equipment, developing medical transport and health insurance systems, and activities aimed at reducing the spread of infectious diseases. Cooperation with local partners and support from Polish development assistance contribute to long-lasting improvements in the healthcare system in the region.

The project is co-financed by Polish development cooperation funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, in partnership with Doctors with Africa CUAMM.The project is co-financed by Polish development cooperation funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, in partnership with Doctors with Africa CUAMM.
