Poland Flood: Intensified Support

Reading time
3 minutes

In response to last year’s flood, which affected numerous towns in the southern part of the country, we are actively carrying out initiatives to provide aid to those affected and support local healthcare centers. Our actions include purchasing medical equipment and preparing shopping vouchers to offer swift assistance in crisis situations.

The flood in southern Poland shook the entire country. The scale of destruction remains overwhelming to this day. Residents of flooded towns fought for their lives, health, and belongings for a long time. Now, the time has come for post-crisis reconstruction, which we are actively supporting. Our medical teams—doctors, nurses, paramedics, and psychologists—continue to work tirelessly in the area of last year’s natural disaster. Initially, they operated under extremely difficult conditions, dealing with waterborne diseases, a surge in infections, and the worsening health of patients with chronic illnesses. Now, they are focusing on providing long-term assistance.

We are currently in the process of purchasing equipment for healthcare centers and intensively working on providing shopping vouchers for the most affected individuals. Our medical teams—doctors, psychologists, paramedics, and nurses—are constantly on-site, responding to the needs of those impacted by the flood. We have far exceeded our initial goals—so far, more than 3,500 people have received assistance, even though our original target was 2,500 beneficiaries — emphasizes Marcin Pernal, project coordinator and member of the PMM Medical Emergency Team.

The 2024 flood directly affected 2.38 million residents in over 749 towns, particularly in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. A total of 11,502 buildings, including schools, kindergartens, and medical facilities, were destroyed, forcing the evacuation of 6,544 people. Nearly 57,000 residents lost access to essential services and goods, such as medicine, medical equipment, and transportation. The greatest current needs are in the municipalities of Lądek-Zdrój, Głuchołazy, and Stronie Śląskie, where access to healthcare is severely hindered due to staff and material shortages in Primary Healthcare (POZ) facilities. We are providing medical equipment, medicines, and personnel support in these areas.
The flood has also caused immense psychological distress—people who lost everything and saw their sense of security shattered need support and reassurance that they are not alone. They can count on us in this regard as well.
