The flood in southern Poland has devastated the country, leaving residents fighting for their health and belongings. There is a critical shortage of medicines, drinking water, and electricity, putting those in need of medical help in a difficult position. We have already sent essential supplies to flood victims in Lądek-Zdrój, Stronie Śląskie, and nearby areas.
In the Lower Silesian, Opole, and Silesian Voivodeships, people went days without sleep, awaiting rescue and assistance. Now, as the waters recede, a new reality emerges with a lack of basic necessities. Those needing medical help face significant stress due to shortages of medicines, dressings, antiseptics, and essential medical equipment. Additionally, illnesses are spreading in the aftermath of the floods.
– Many people are suffering from shortness of breath, and chronic illnesses are worsening. Diarrhea and vomiting are common among those cleaning their flooded homes, and the risk of tetanus is increasing – says Justyna Godziewicz, a primary care worker in Lądek-Zdrój.
Seniors often remain in their flooded homes, unwilling to leave, and also need care and medical assistance. They are cut off from the world, waiting for basic help to arrive. People returning to clean their homes face severe conditions, with shortages of drinking water and interruptions in gas and electricity supply. Some clinics in Lądek-Zdrój were flooded, leaving only a few operational facilities. Many injured and chronically ill patients are seeking help, but medical assistance is insufficient, despite the efforts of healthcare workers.
Flood victims need support now and will continue to need it for a long time. We are providing individual aid and supporting medical points in affected areas. We’ve donated essential medicines, including pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and medical supplies. Needs are continuously monitored, and additional assistance is being prepared.
