In Syria, the dust of war never settles for long. While the world watches political shifts and upheavals, we understand that the humanitarian needs on the ground remain immense. Since 2016, we have been providing aid to civilians affected by conflicts and natural disasters. Today, once again, we are stepping up to support those who need help the most.
The offensive launched by rebels from their enclave in northwestern Syria does not signal the end of the Syrian crisis. It is still uncertain whether a government will emerge that all parties to this nearly 13-year conflict can accept. The first clashes between forces backed by Turkey (the Syrian National Army) and the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces suggest that the war has simply entered another phase. Meanwhile, nearly 17 million people in Syria require humanitarian assistance. According to the United Nations, hundreds of civilians have likely been killed in recent intense fighting, and almost 200,000 have been displaced.
We are monitoring the situation and are ready to provide aid wherever the dust of war settles. We already know there will be a need to maintain continuity of medical care in places like Aleppo. We are preparing for immediate crisis response and longer-term support – says Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart, Director of the Humanitarian Aid Program at the Polish Medical Mission.
This assistance is even more critical as winter worsens living conditions for millions of internally displaced people who still reside in tents or containers. That’s why we are focusing on urgent support, such as providing medical care and aid to those affected by the conflict. Earlier this year, estimates suggested that around 1,000,000 residential buildings in Syria were destroyed or damaged. This devastation is the result of years of relentless war and last year’s earthquake.
Our presence in Syria extends beyond emergency response. Over the years, we have supported war victims by organizing medical care, helping build hospitals, and providing prosthetics for those who lost limbs. We have also assisted Syrian refugees in neighboring countries such as Iraq and Jordan.
Today, we continue this mission. Thank you for your support, which enables us to reach those most in need. Together, we can help Syria rise from the rubble and endure yet another challenging time.
