Ukraine: Two Hospitals Hit in Night Attacks, 2,500 Strikes on Healthcare Facilities

On Friday, July 11, Russian shelling in Kharkiv struck buildings of a maternity hospital. Nine people were injured, including mothers and newborn babies. A hospital in Chuhuiv was also hit during the night attacks. Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine’s healthcare system has been targeted at least 2,500 times. In June alone, 232 civilians were killed—the deadliest month since 2022.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, residential buildings, energy infrastructure, and healthcare facilities have been consistently attacked. These strikes have killed at least 13,573 civilians. In June, 232 of them lost their lives—the highest monthly death toll in two years. Four out of five civilian deaths occur in regions close to the front line.

Attacking hospitals and medical facilities is a known Russian tactic, previously observed during the war in Syria. Newborns have never been party to any war. That’s why, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, we have supported Ukrainian hospitals—especially neonatal units—by sending equipment and providing training for medical staff, says Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart from Polish Medical Mission.

The situation is most difficult in regions near the front line, Olasińska-Chart adds. People there have no normal access to healthcare, and life is constantly disrupted by repeated Russian bombings. We support them through the operation of our mobile clinics, which reach towns where local clinics and health posts have ceased functioning.

Constant attacks on healthcare make it even harder to aid civilians. On the night of Thursday to Friday, maternity hospital buildings in Kharkiv were hit—nine people were injured, including mothers and newborns. Another strike occurred in Chuhuiv. This brings the total number of attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system to over 2,500—the highest ever recorded in any conflict, according to WHO data. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reports that since February 24, 2022, at least 631 children have been killed in Russian attacks. The youngest was just 23 days old.
