Over 10 children lose limbs every day in Gaza

A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Gaza. Over 58,000 Palestinians have been killed, nearly one-third of them children. More than 90% of homes have been damaged or destroyed. According to a UN report, over 10 children lose one or both legs daily due to bombings.

Doctors at Al-Aqsa hospital report performing amputations, sometimes without anesthesia, on children as young as 2–3 years old. These injuries will impact their lives even in times of peace—limiting education, mobility, and social inclusion, as seen in Syria.

Prosthetics are currently not an option—less than half of Gaza’s hospitals are operational, with critical shortages of staff, medicine, and equipment. Thousands of wounded receive no care.

We want to provide prosthetics, but that requires a ceasefire and functioning healthcare – says Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart of the Polish Medical Mission – Relative to its population, Gaza has the highest number of child amputees worldwide. The international community must respond with long-term support.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 58,573 Palestinians have died since the escalation began—31% of them children. Research suggests the actual number may be up to 40% higher. On the Israeli side, over 1,600 people have been killed, about half of them civilians in the October 7 attack.
