300 million people in need

Armed conflicts, the global climate crisis and economic factors make 2024 an extremely difficult and challenging year for humanity. The UN predicts that as many as 300 million people will need humanitarian aid. Residents of dozens of countries around the world will face hunger, malnutrition and epidemics of diseases forgotten in our reality, such as cholera.

Recent years show that humanitarian aid is becoming an integral element of our world. Last year, the armed conflict in Ukraine remained one of the biggest problems and challenges for aid organizations. In 2024, the military situation in the world will not be simpler. We already know that hostilities between Israel and the Gaza Strip have resulted in a sharp increase in civilian casualties. During war, people who save lives and health on a daily basis also suffer.

WHO recorded over one thousand three hundred attacks on workers, health care facilities and medical transports last year. Most of them in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. In such a case, it is difficult to help injured civilians. Their health situation is constantly deteriorating: not only as a result of bombings, but also difficult access to doctors, clean water and food –

-describes the situation in conflict areas Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart from the Polish Medical Mission.

The lack of clean water and food also contributes to the return of diseases that are considered forgotten in our world. Last year, as many as 29 countries reported cholera outbreaks. This disease is especially difficult to treat if patients do not have access to clean water and food. Meanwhile, in 2024, the global climate crisis may make it even more difficult than before. The coming years will probably be the hottest in history, which will add to the problem of rapid displacement of people fleeing natural disasters. The problems existing in various parts of Africa will therefore begin to deepen. The same applies to world hunger and the children affected by it.

Hunger is not only a lack of food, it is also an impoverishment of the diet and its maladjustment to the child’s developing body. Families who not long ago could grow ingredients for their own meals now have no local plants at their disposal and are dependent on more expensive goods imported from abroad. Meanwhile, at both ends of the supply chain, there have been serious problems in recent years, often of a military nature – as in Ethiopia or Ukraine

Meanwhile, acute malnutrition already affects 258 million people in 58 countries. It is usually caused by: armed conflicts, economic shocks, extreme climatic conditions, poverty and inequality. By 2024, malnutrition will threaten the lives of 45 million children under 5 years of age (representing 7 percent of all children worldwide). Without international humanitarian efforts, the prospects for food security will deteriorate greatly, and the people of Gaza and Ethiopia will suffer the most.

Any help, especially if organized in a thoughtful way, will be worth its weight in gold this year.
