Over 25 Children Die Every Day in Gaza

On March 18, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was broken. In the month since the fighting resumed, 1,890 people have been killed on the Palestinian side. The total death toll has now exceeded 51,000, including over 15,000 children. That’s more than 25 underage victims per day. The humanitarian blockade imposed by Israel on March 2 is still in place—doctors from the Polish Medical Mission report a severe shortage of medicines and basic medical supplies.

After a brief period of relief due to the ceasefire, Gaza’s residents are once again facing a humanitarian catastrophe. Between March 18 and April 22, 2025, at least 1,890 people were killed and 4,950 were wounded—many of whom had no access to any medical facilities. Nearly one in three of these victims is a child. Airstrikes are not the only problem for Gaza’s residents: the flow of life-saving supplies—food, medicine, fuel, and cooking gas—has been cut off for the 2.1 million people still in the Gaza Strip.

“Our doctors report a growing number of malnourished patients, including those suffering from anemia. If such a patient is admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound, their chances of proper recovery after surgery are much lower,” says Ewa Piekarska-Dymus, President of the Polish Medical Mission. “They’re also lacking basic medical equipment, such as surgical sutures.”

The healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of total collapse. More than 146 medical points are currently located in areas under evacuation orders, meaning that 57% of functioning health facilities are inaccessible to most of those in need. Severe shortages of medicine, equipment, and exhausted medical personnel have left thousands of injured and sick people without any help. Doctors sent to Gaza by the Polish Medical Mission are still on duty at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah.

“There are no longer any scheduled procedures; doctors are only treating emergency cases, mainly those wounded in the attacks,” adds Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart from the Polish Medical Mission. “When there’s no access to food or clean water, the risk of epidemics spikes rapidly. And the most vulnerable lives are at the greatest risk: children, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women.”

According to data from the Gaza Strip Ministry of Health, at least 51,266 Palestinians have been killed since the escalation of the conflict (although research published in The Lancet suggests the actual death toll could be up to 40% higher). Thirty-one percent of the victims are children. On the Israeli side, over 1,600 people have died, about 50% of whom were civilians killed in the October 7, 2023, attack.
