On October 7, 2023, the world was shaken by shocking news of a brutal Hamas attack on Israel. The assault, which claimed many lives, marked the beginning of one of the most difficult periods in the region’s history. The ongoing military actions since then have triggered a wave of violence, suffering, and chaos, with the Gaza Strip becoming an area facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Over the past year, medics have worked tirelessly, saving lives every day under extreme conditions.

The Gaza Strip, already one of the most densely populated places in the world before the war, is now grappling with a humanitarian disaster. Over 89% of its territory is considered inaccessible to civilians, and internally displaced people are trying to find shelter in small, overcrowded areas. The Polish Medical Mission continues its operations in the Gaza Strip, supporting local hospitals and medical staff. Despite the evacuation of most areas and continuous bombings, Jordanian doctors working on-site still provide help to those who need it most.

Our team could be evacuated at any moment. We work in monthly rotations, but we don’t know when the next group of doctors will be able to reach those in need. The route from Jordan to the Gaza Strip passes through the West Bank, which is no longer safe either- says Dr. Yaroup Aljouni of the Jordan Health Aid Society, which collaborates with the Polish Medical Mission on the ground.

The situation is extremely difficult—not only are there shortages of medicines and basic medical tools, but medics also have to cope with power outages, further complicating their daily work. The Polish Medical Mission operates in the Gaza Strip by organizing deliveries of medical equipment and supplies and supporting local doctors in facilities that continue to function despite the ongoing conflict. One such place is a hospital in Deir al-Balah, where Jordanian medics working with the PMM continue to care for patients, even though most civilians have been evacuated.

“The doctors who remain in Deir al-Balah work under constant tension. Despite the evacuation, a few patients whose health conditions prevented transport are still in the hospital. Our partners work there every day, knowing they could be evacuated at any moment,” said Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart, humanitarian aid director at the Polish Medical Mission. Since the beginning of the conflict, the Polish Medical Mission has delivered three rounds of aid to the most vulnerable in the Gaza Strip. In addition to medical supplies like respirators and surgical dressings, the organization has also delivered infant formula, hygiene products, and warm clothing. Thanks to cooperation with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, this aid has reached hundreds of families struggling with the devastating effects of the war.

It’s not just the war that’s a challenge—the growing issue of hunger and malnutrition in the Gaza Strip has led to a situation where the youngest residents don’t have a chance of survival. That’s why every bit of help, every donation, and every piece of support we receive from our donors is invaluable- said Małgorzata Olasińska-Chart, humanitarian aid director at the Polish Medical Mission.

Currently, the PMM team, together with local partners, is preparing to send another aid shipment. Although conditions are extremely difficult, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to save the lives and health of hundreds of people caught in this tragic situation.
