The year 2025 was a period of intensive operational activity for the PMM Emergency Medical Team (PMM EMT), marked by international medical missions and the systematic strengthening of crisis response readiness—both in Poland and abroad.

The team, established by the Polish Medical Mission, is composed of doctors, nurses, paramedics, midwives, and non-medical volunteers. PMM EMT primarily responds to sudden natural disasters and humanitarian crises, while also placing strong emphasis on long-term efforts—strengthening local healthcare systems, health education, and building the competencies of medical staff in developing countries.

PMM EMT medical missions in 2025

In 2025, PMM EMT teams carried out medical missions in Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi, reaching regions with very limited access to healthcare. During these operations, medical assistance was provided to 1,433 patients. The scope of medical activities included, among others:

  • medical and dental consultations
  • procedural interventions
  • ultrasound diagnostics in field conditions

In parallel, health education activities and first aid training for local communities were conducted, helping to strengthen health system resilience even after the missions had ended.

“EMT volunteers not only save lives, but also learn to work in the most challenging conditions—under time pressure, without full infrastructure, and with limited medical resources. This is invaluable experience,” summarizes these missions Ewa Piekarska-Dymus, President of the Polish Medical Mission.

Training, exercises, and operational readiness

A key element of PMM EMT’s activities in 2025 was the continuous improvement of operational competencies. The team carried out three national exercises in Zawady, Świętouście, and Przysłop, covering:

  • emergency medicine
  • operational logistics
  • team management in crisis conditions

Exercises included setting up a field clinic and working in simulated emergency scenarios. Team members also participated in specialized training courses in ALS, CRM, hypothermia, ECG interpretation, and operations in field conditions, as well as in training conducted in cooperation with GOPR (Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue), focused on mountain rescue, casualty evacuation, and work in difficult terrain.

International cooperation and WHO EMT standards

The year 2025 was also a time of intensive international cooperation. PMM EMT continued preparations for WHO EMT certification and for participation in EU civil protection mechanisms. Team members took part in the Union Mechanism Introduction Course in Sintra, Portugal, and in the EMT Community of Practice Workshop for the European region, organized by the EMT Germany focal point and the Robert Koch Institute.

Local activities and medical coverage in Poland

Alongside its international operations, PMM EMT actively supported mass events and local initiatives in Poland by providing medical coverage and training support. The team took part, among others, in the 19th edition of the “Policz się z cukrzycą” run, the Lower Silesian Mountain Running Festival, and the 11th Cracovia Royal Half Marathon in Kraków. Training was provided for the medical patrol of the 31st Pol’and’Rock Festival, an expert panel on mission safety was co-organized, and educational and informational activities were carried out, including a guest appearance on Radio Kraków in the programme “Przed Hejnałem”.

Development of the PMM EMT team

In 2025, the PMM EMT team was strengthened by 15 new members—medical professionals and logisticians. Team development, specialized equipment training, and the consistent improvement of operational standards enable us to build readiness to respond to crisis situations around the world.
