Senegal is a special place on the map of our activities in West Africa. For several years, we have been working to improve the conditions in rural health centers and conduct educational classes in the field of healthy eating. Recipes developed by local nutritionists are included in a special cookbook.

This year, we will focus on providing the best space for further activities. We will equip 13 health centers in the Fatick district, and we will thoroughly renovate 5 of them, creating a friendly place for patients and doctors. The staff of all malnutrition treatment units will use anthropometric equipment and nutrients, especially needed in the care of seriously malnourished children with complications. There will be scales, newborn measuring devices, and treatment charts. In addition, we will train 30 health professionals in the field of dietetics, focusing primarily on the fight against acute malnutrition. The weekly training will familiarize you with the latest guidelines on counteracting malnutrition and rules of conduct, focusing on helping children up to 5 years of age.

Despite the stable political situation and improving economic conditions, Senegal is one of the least developed countries in the world. The differences can be seen especially outside the largest cities. Access to health care remains difficult in rural areas and climate change is clearly visible on the home tables with undifferentiated and nutrient-poor food. It is rural health centers that will become our meeting place, education, and support for the poorest and most needy. Social workers and community nurses are trusted people who, with the support of the Polish Medical Mission, will reach mothers and caregivers of children to promote appropriate behavior. Educational materials include information on caring for newborns and toddlers, and recipes based on local products to help you eat a balanced diet and reduce the risk of malnutrition.

We do not forget to help newborns – the regional hospital in Fatick will be equipped with basic neonatal equipment, which will improve care for babies and reduce the risk of perinatal mortality. The neonatal ward will receive 2 incubators, a phototherapy lamp, and operating tables. In all 13 health centers, we will create newborn corners – places where a child spends the first 6 hours of life. As before, the project will be carried out in close collaboration with local medical and healthcare professionals to reach patients as effectively as possible.
